PlanetBase Review

Limited food, A handful of crew, and a remote planet.

This is your typical space related storyline, you begin with a handful of everything and need to survive.Time is of the essence, especially with a space port to build.
This is the beginning situation you will be in on each of the planets you decide to play on, each with their own starting conditions, supply loadout and themes.
This colony managing game is of the smaller scope, with great priority on Spare parts, Power and Food, the rest will sort itself out.
With a dated release as of the writing of this article. PB was released in OCT of 2015 from indie game studio Madruga Works.
The visual presentation, background thematic, and overall game design was impressive to me for a first game.

Building Your Empire

On landing, your crew, supplies, and a few robots are all you have to survive the harshness of this new world. Getting the essentials online and fast are CRITICAL.
Failing To get Oxygen and water up before nightfall will most certainly spell disaster for the fledgling colony. With a vast variety of foods, both organic and lab grown assist in maintaining a healthy well rounded meal for your colonists. A byproduct of farming feeds your plastic production, toss up a mine,
and complement these two with a processing facility and your early game is set.

Three keys to colony success

1. Happiness. If your colonists are not happy their work suffers and your colony grade declines. Your grade or fame is what causes people to join you or trade with you.
2. Resources. Keeping an eye on food levels and spare parts is a high priority. Regularly expanding with additional bio-domes as your colony grows staves off potential food shortages.
3. Intelligent Design. You wont be good at this your first few plays, but an efficient colony is a successful colony. Pairing your processing plants next to airlocks with mines gives your workers the path of least resistance.
The longer the colonist spends walking, the less time they are able to dedicate to tasks, so by thinking ahead and planning accordingly will greatly leverage your later game success.

SPACEPORT!

After your colony is sizeable, and your enjoying the fruits of your labor you will think “what can I do to top this? We made our own colony, how can this get better?”
Psh
Open it to the universe…. and CHARGE THEM FOR IT. Of course.
By utilizing the different sized landing pads you can open your colony to visitors and even intercept calls from vessels in distress. These visitors will pay for your services, and offering assistance to those in need will grant you fame points.
Be aware though, this does add to the burden your already supplying with regards to oxygen, food, and medical supplies. I advise a fully staffed med bay, canteen and 2 sleeping areas along with a full staff of armed guards near the commercial entrance.
